Santa Barbara, CA, April 2, 1999. Tenon and Aestiva announce the immediate availability of Aestiva's HTML/OS, powerful software for developing advanced, dynamic web sites, on both Mac OS and Mac OS X Server. Aestiva's HTML/OS runs with WebTen on Mac OS and with WebTenon Apple's bundled Apache on OS X Server.
Aestiva's HTML/OS is an extension to HTML that allows you to do on-the-fly word-processing, spreadsheet, database and programming operations within HTML documents. It can be used with any standard HTML editor and is easier to learn and deploy than Perl. For high-volume sites and database driven sites, HTML/OS is more effective than Perl because of its high-performance. In the same way that Javascripts are placed in documents, English-like HTML/OS tags can be placed in documents to perform a wide range of tasks. For example, when a user makes a request, HTML documents can be merged with server information on-the-fly. HTML/OS includes a built-in database and comes with a suite of tools, including a contact management application, a file manager, and hundreds of example dynamic web pages, including complete shopping carts and web-based chat and discussion forums. HTML/OS can be used for building eCommerce sites, database driven sites and web-based applications.
By using Tenon technology, Aestiva was able to bring their powerful UNIX-based web toolsuite into the unique WebTen execution environment. Aestiva used MachTen, Tenon's UNIX OS for Macintosh, to port their standard UNIX product to Mac OS. "Our port of HTML/OS from UNIX to MachTen was as quick as any port from one version of UNIX to another," said David Silverberg, Director of Technology at Aestiva. "It really amazed us. It took only a few days to port about 500,000 lines of code!" Once compiled with MachTen, HTML/OS was simply placed in WebTen's cgi-bin folder. Dave added, "This porting strategy cut our porting time by a factor of one hundred over doing a native Mac port."
WebTen, a point & click Apache-based web server, is the only Mac OS web server that competes well with UNIX and NT in web performance and features, sustaining over 1000 connections per second - more than five times the performance of its competition. WebTen is not only the web server performance leader on Mac OS, but also the feature leader. WebTen supports Apache modules as well as Macintosh-style plug-ins, extending the breadth and depth of Macintosh web serving to encompass the functionality of the more than two million sites that are currently supported by Apache. It supports pure Perl CGI scripts as well as MacPerl. It supports state-of-the-art web security in the form of an advanced secure sockets layer (SSL) that, unlike its competition, lets a single machine use multiple secure certificates, making WebTen an ideal platform for web-based eCommerce. On OS X Server, Tenon's WebTen extends Apple's bundled Apache with its powerful point and click interface and with SSL to support eCommerce.
Aestiva's HTML/OS for Mac OS and OS X Server retails for $799. WebTen is $495 for Mac OS and $299 (introductory) for OS X Server. For more information about Aestiva, see http://www.aestiva.com.
