Tenon releases WebTen 4.0 for Mac OS X Server

A web server that takes advantage of the power of Apple's next-generation OS

Santa Barbara, CA, January 4, 1999.Tenon Intersystems today announced WebTen 4.0, a version of its industrial-strength, high-performance Apache-based Web server for MacOS X Server. WebTen incorporates the highly-acclaimed Apache web server software developed by the Apache Group. Apache is well-known as stable, full-strength, feature-rich web server software used on almost two million machines worldwide. Tenon has taken this mature, integrated, scalable software and extended it with performance enhancements and Macintosh-specific features to make WebTen's Apache the fastest and easiest-to-use Apache in the world. On MacOS X Server, WebTen extends the open source Apache with a point & click interface, internet object caching and security to provide an ideal foundation for eCommerce solutions.

WebTen 4.0 is downloadable today for use with Rhapsody DR2 and will be available in the future on CD for $495 when MacOS X Server ships. Until MacOS X Server ships, WebTen 4.0 will be available for $299. While taking advantage of MacOS X Server's preemptive multitasking, memory protection and advanced virtual memory, WebTen 4.0 gives Macintosh users the same advanced features of WebTen 2.1 (for MacOS). WebTen's caching conforms to the Internet Caching Protocol to support cascading proxies. The SSL 3.0 supports multiple certificates on a single host. A high-performance, internet-standard search engine, ht://Dig, is included. A downloadable 14-day demo is available at: /products/webten.

Both WebTen for MacOS and WebTen for MacOS X Server includes the ability to dynamically add new Apache modules. Macintosh web plug-in developers are encouraged to use Tenon's WebTen SDK to create Apache modules that will work not only with WebTen on MacOS, WebTen on MacOS X Server and MacOS X, but also with the open source Apache included with MacOS X Server, MkLinux and Linux for PPC. "Transitioning WebSTAR-style plug-ins to Apache modules will expand Macintosh plug-in developer's reach to the almost two million Apache web servers on other platforms," said Steve Holmgren, Tenon's President. The WebTen SDK is designed to work with Metrowerks' CodeWarrior or Tenon's own MachTen UNIX. It is freely available and downloadable from: /products/webten/SDK
