A suite of tools to dramatically simplify Apache configuration & maintenance
Santa Barbara, CA, May 8, 2000. Tenon Intersystems, today announced a public
beta of iTools for Mac OS X (DP3). Tenon's iTools is a web server that takes advantage
of the preemptive multitasking and memory protection of Apple's next-generation
OS. iTools for Mac OS X Server has been available for over one year and is being
used worldwide for secure, commercial web service. Because iTools runs natively
on OS X, Tenon has been able to leapfrog traditional Macintosh vendors who are
pursuing Carbonized versions of their existing Macintosh applications for Apple's
upcoming OS X. Tenon's iTools extends and enhances Mac OS X's networking performance,
efficiency, ease-of-use, and functionality, with a family of tools essential to
serious, commercial content delivery and eCommerce.
iTools for Mac OS X is an evolution of Tenon's WebTen for Mac OS, heralded for being the easiest and fastest Apache in the world. The iTools package is designed to complement and extend the Apache that is included with Apple's OS X and to make it easy for webmasters to set up and support sophisticated network servers. Jack Miller, President of the Miller Group , a consulting firm specializing in web-based software for schools, said, "iTools brings true ease of administration to our school district clients and still gives them the power and flexibility of Apache. We know that iTools will be an important part of our portfolio."
Using Apple's bundled Apache as a point of departure and incorporating the latest open source protocol implementations of Apache, DNS, FTP and sendmail, iTools extends the OS X platform with a rich set of network services. Included with iTools are a powerful WEBmail server, a state-of-the-art domain name server, a multihoming FTP server, a robust SSL encryption engine with tiered-certificate support for eCommerce, a powerful caching engine with state-of-the-art proxy support, a Sherlock-savvy search engine, and FastCGI to provide high-performance Perl and CGI execution. The WEBmail tool turns Mac OS X into a complete POP3, IMAP4, fully customizable, anytime, anywhere 'hotmail' style mail server. The FTP tool includes support for virtual FTP hosts, password protected FTP and anonymous FTP. The iTools web server package is mature, integrated and scalable and all of the networking services are supported using a point and click, browser-based administration tool, enabling system administrators and webmasters to manage their web servers remotely using any internet browser. iTools provides the power and flexibility of an advanced graphical user interface, while still leaving the native configuration files accessible.
Tenon's web server software gives webmasters an evolutionary path from Mac OS to OS X Server to OS X, enabling them to gracefully move content and CGI scripts from one platform to another, all with a consistent architecture for secure web and mail delivery. iTools for OS X will ship this summer as soon as Apple releases OS X. A preliminary version of iTools for OS X is available now as a downloadable public beta. The beta includes a built-in 14-day license, which can be easily extended by contacting Tenon . The iTools suite of downloadable packages includes: open source applications (a search engine, a Java servlet engine, a powerful PHP scripting tool, and an MySQL database), demonstrations of third party applications (Matador Design's WebEvent calendar program, Aestiva's dynamic web building HTML/OS tool), SSL and WEBmail.
